The former Church of Santa Chiara is what remains of an ancient monastery founded in the 12th century by Augustinian monks and originally dedicated to Saint Nicholas.
After briefly hosting a group of Benedictine nuns, the religious complex was assigned in 1439 to a group of Franciscan nuns who restored the church and consecrated it as Santa Chiara.
In 1826 it was converted into a workplace, specifically for glass bottle production.
In 1990 a fire destroyed the church’s wooden roof.
In 2016, restoration began along with the installation of new electrical, lighting, and fire protection systems.
The building now functions as a glass museum with reception rooms for themed events celebrating Venetian tradition.
