The Glass Cathedral, Santa Chiara – Murano, Venice

The former church of Santa Chiara is all that remains of an ancient monastery founded in the 12th century by Augustinian monks and originally dedicated to St. Nicholas. After briefly housing a group of Benedictine nuns, the religious complex was assigned to a group of Franciscan nuns in 1439 who restored the church and consecrated it with the name Santa Chiara.
In 1826 it was converted into a place of work focusing on glass bottle production.
In 1990 a fire destroyed the wooden roof of the church.
In 2016, restoration began and new electrical, lighting and fire protection systems were installed; it is now a glass museum with reception rooms for Venetian themed parties.
